Interesting about the starfish

  • Currently, about 1500 different species of starfish are known.
  • Although starfish have no typical sensory organs, they react via primitive sensory cells to light, water temperature, and touch.
  • Starfish can regenerate lost arms. Even several, e.g. Arms bitten by fish can not prevent the starfish from reproducing. Each arm of the starfish independently produces new eggs.
  • The North Pacific Starfish is on the list of the 100 worst invasive species. Through the water-filled ballast tanks of the ship, the species has spread worldwide and since then destroyed the natural ecosystems.
  • The Crown of Thorns threatens the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia. A single starfish kills about 1 square meter of coral each month. Attempts to collect the starfish manually and thus permanently remove, so far failed. Due to the enormous reproduction rate (more than 10 million eggs per individual), the number of starfish is almost impossible to minimize.
  • Starfish does not have a brain.
  • As a precaution, starfish found on the beach should not be touched. Some starfish have poison spikes, which can lead to severe pain and paralysis when in contact.
  • Not all starfish have five arms. The crown of thorns has e.g. up to 23 arms.
  • When eating, the starfish inverts its stomach over the prey and digests outside the body.
